Ritter was joined in today's announcement by Maj. General H. Michael
Edwards, the Adjutant General for Colorado. "These armories will mean a
lot to the Colorado communities of Alamosa, Grand Junction and
Windsor," Edwards said. "They will bring federal and state dollars and
jobs. The economic impact is in the millions."

WINDSOR - Gov. Bill Ritter has proposed new state funding to help the Colorado National Guard build new armories in Windsor, Grand Junction and Alamosa.

At a Tuesday morning press conference in Denver, Ritter announced details of funding for the three new facilities. In his Fiscal Year 2010-11 budget proposal to the Legislature's Capital Development Committee on Nov. 2, Ritter called for using $6.4 million from the Colorado Veterans Trust Fund and Real Estate Proceeds Fund to draw down $1.3 million in federal matching funds. An additional $10 million in federal funds will also be sought for the armories.

The armories will accommodate a new 800-soldier infantry battalion assigned to Colorado in 2007 as part of the Army's "Grow the Force" initiative. The National Guard is currently recruiting for these battalions.

Ritter was joined in today's announcement by Maj. General H. Michael Edwards, the Adjutant General for Colorado. "These armories will mean a lot to the Colorado communities of Alamosa, Grand Junction and Windsor," Edwards said. "They will bring federal and state dollars and jobs. The economic impact is in the millions."

The Windsor armory would be built on 25 acres with a 30,717-square-foot facility that includes a drill hall, classrooms, kitchen and offices. About 130 people would be located at the facility.
